MacBook Pro 2015 SSD Upgrade: 512GB to 2TB for Video Editing
Quadrupled storage capacity for professional video editor
Video editor Jason needed more storage for his 4K video projects. We upgraded his MacBook Pro 2015 from 512GB to 2TB NVMe SSD, giving him 4x the storage for RM 980 - much cheaper than buying a new MacBook.
The Transformation
Before & After Results
Jason, a professional video editor in Sunway, was constantly running out of storage on his MacBook Pro 2015. With 512GB SSD, he could barely fit one 4K video project at a time, forcing him to constantly transfer files to external drives and back. This workflow was slow, risky (potential data loss), and frustrating. He was considering buying a new MacBook Pro with 1TB for RM 9,999, but preferred to keep his 2015 model which still had excellent performance and all the ports he needed (HDMI, SD card, USB-A). He just needed more storage.
Only 512GB total storage
Constantly running out of space (450GB used)
Only room for 1-2 4K projects at a time
Frequent external drive transfers
Slow workflow due to storage juggling
Risk of data loss during transfers
We recommended a 2TB NVMe SSD upgrade - the maximum capacity his 2015 MacBook Pro supports. Using a compatible high-speed NVMe adapter and drive, we cloned his entire 512GB drive to the new 2TB SSD using professional disk cloning software. This preserved his macOS installation, all applications (Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve), and all settings exactly as they were. The cloning process took 3 hours. After installation, we verified the new SSD was running at full PCIe Gen 3 speeds (up to 3000 MB/s read/write - even faster than his original Apple SSD). We then securely wiped his old 512GB SSD and gave it to him as a backup drive.
2TB total storage (4x original capacity)
Can store 10+ simultaneous 4K projects
Faster read/write speeds (3000 MB/s vs 1800 MB/s)
All asset libraries stored locally
No more external drive dependency
Improved video export times
Bonus: Original 512GB SSD as backup drive

"Best decision ever! I was going to spend RM 10,000 on a new MacBook just for more storage, but Kevin suggested upgrading my 2015 MacBook Pro to 2TB. It cost less than RM 1,000 and now my MacBook has more storage than even the new models! The upgrade process was smooth - they cloned everything so I didn't have to reinstall anything. My Final Cut Pro projects now load faster because the new SSD is actually quicker than the original. I can work on multiple 4K projects simultaneously without running out of space. This will last me another 3-4 years easily. Saved me RM 9,000!"
